By Anonymous May 12, 2004 -- We’re fast approaching the day when analog television will soon be a thing of the past. Currently stations are broadcasting programming with both analog and digital signals and by the year 2006, all Television stations will be broadcasting digital Television only. DTV is the new technology that allows broadcasters to provide higher quality services. Digital television allows the transmission of television programming in two different formats, HDTV and SDTV. High definition Television (“HDTV”) is a format that offers wide screen Programming (16:9 aspect ratio) with a higher resolution picture. Standard Definition Television (‘SDTV’) is a format that is similar to our current format (4:3 aspect ratio) but has better color renditions than the old analog system. DTV will allow broad casters to simultaneously transmit multiple programs using a single television channel. DTV will provide improved audio with up to five channels of sound per program.
So what does all this mean to the consumer? To enjoy the full benefits of HDTV you will have to purchase a new television that is HD-ready or HD-Capable. HD ready televisions have the receiver/decoder built-in. HD capable Televisions need an external receiver/decoder to receive high definition signals. Existing television sets will not be able to display DTV signals. A converter box will be needed to convert the DTV signal to an analog signal used by the existing TV set. The image and sound will stay about the same. A Standard television Screen has a 4:3 aspect ration. A high definition television or wide screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio. Not all Digital televisions are wide screen only HDTV sets offer a wide screen format. Even DVD players will not provide true high definition programming unless the player is an HD-DVD player.
Cheers!
Drew
